I am Participating in NaNoWriMo!

Happy November everyone! It's that time of year again, where the air gets cold, the leaves fall from the trees, and my car has a layer of frost on the windshield! One of the best things about November is the start of the NaNoWriMo, or National Novel Writing Month.

The NaNo is an annual writing competition that challenges writers to complete a novel in 30 days. I am always working on something, but I love the spirit of this event and the opportunity and freedom it gives to writers.

The NaNo is followed almost immediately by Amazon's Breakthrough Novel Award Contest, which is a great opportunity for unknown writers to get their work noticed.

You will start seeing information about the 2013 Novel Awards sometime in January. Please take the time to check out both of these amazing competitions, and spread the word. It's so important to so many writers, especially those who are just starting their careers.

In other news, I finally joined Facebook. I know, it's taken a long time... but my husband thought it was a good idea and I have to admit that sometimes he's right! I hope you will stop by my new Facebook page and say hello.

DIY: How to Make Beautiful Wedding Vases for Less than $2.00 Each

I don't usually post crafty stuff, because I simply don't have the time. But my husband and I were helping a family member who was on a strict wedding budget. All the prices for local florists were over $1,000, so they decided to buy their flowers at Costco. The flowers cost only $200, a fraction of the quotes price from the local florists. They arrived via Fed Ex, fresh and beautiful, about 4 days before the wedding. The bride chose carnations because they had a special family significance.

Here are the carnations and baby's breath. They don't look like very many, but it's 150 stems, plus the baby's breath. As soon as the flowers arrived, we plopped them into buckets with water. They have opened about 50%. The whole house smells wonderful.

Now we just had to buy vases.

We went everywhere, searching for vases. We needed about 25 of them, and all the ones we found were at least $11 or more. Some were over $25 each. It seemed like such a waste for something that we were only going to use for one day. So at the last minute, we tried a local dollar store. Look what we found.

Eureka! There were tons of vases, all for a $1. We bought all the vases on the bottom shelf, and came home with 25 vases for $25 bucks plus tax.

Now, the vases were a little small, but still functional. My husband and I decided to "pretty them up" a bit for the wedding.  We didn't have any specific ideas, but we went to Michael's craft store and started brainstorming. We got some pretty ribbon, some fake "wedding rings" that were in the wedding favors section, and some tiny silk flowers.

Here are the rings, cost: about $4.00 for a bag of 200.

Here are the little silk flowers, cost: $3.50 for a bag of 100:

My husband used a glue gun and some patience to create these vases over the next three days. It took him about 2 1/2 hours to do all of them.

Looks pretty good, right? So a little patience and a hot glue gun really paid off. The wedding is on Sunday, so I'll post pics of the vases filled with flowers (the finished product) on that day.

UPDATE: Here's a photo of the vase, filled with water and flowers. Even with the carnations and baby's breath, it looked sparse, so we filled the vases with some additional green filler from our backyard flowers. There was a LOT (over half) of baby's breath leftover, so I probably would skip buying the baby's breath if I had to do it again.

Vosper's Revenge Release

Hi Everyone;
I'm sorry the purchase links for Vosper's Revenge haven't been posted yet; I've been assured by my publisher that we'll have them within the next 48 hours or so. The nook version will probably be available first, with the Kindle edition available about a day later. That's due to Amazon's slower processing time.

Thanks for your understanding,

Kristian Alva

Happy New Year!

This year brings the promise of new challenges and also a lot of hope. I know that a lot of people struggled financially last year and the holidays always help me remember what's really important--namely, our health and well-being, and the well-being of our loved ones. I've spent almost the entire month of December with family and, although everyone knows that sometimes we "butt heads" with our loved ones, it still makes me feel very blessed to be surrounded by people that I love.

Now, I've been getting a lot of questions via e-mail about the third book in the "Dragon Stones" series. "Vosper's Revenge" is the last installment in the three-part Dragon Stones Saga, and will be released in April 2012. The paperback and the e-book edition should be released about the same time, (within a few weeks of one another).

I'm currently working on my next series, The Chronicles of Tallin (due out 2013), and I'm having a lot of fun with the character. Initially, Tallin wasn't going to have his own series, but he ended up being a fan favorite (and he's been one of my favorite characters from the very beginning) so I knew I had to give him his own books. I hope you all enjoy reading about his adventures as much as I enjoy writing about them.

2011 is over, and I wish everyone a happy and prosperous 2012!
