The Chronicles of Tallin: Announcement!

Sorry I haven't had the chance to post in a while, but, like everyone else, I've been busy with the holidays. I hope all of you are enjoying time with family and all the great food. I know that my pants are certainly tighter this month!

Anyway, I'd like to announce the title listing for my next series, the Chronicles of Tallin. Although it hasn't been yet been decided whether this will be a trilogy or a four-book series, the titles for the first three books have been announced. I posted the cover image for book one a few weeks ago, but here it is again, just in case.

1. The Balborite Curse (2013)
2. The Rise of the Blood Masters (2013)
3. Kathir's Redemption (TBA)

Right now, my publisher is doing the final touches on Vosper's Revenge, Book Three of the Dragon Stones Saga. I'll make sure and post an update as soon as I get more information about the last book in that series.

It's been a great year. Dragon Stones and The Return of The Dragon Riders have both been doing very well on the Epic Fantasy bestseller lists, and I have all of my fans to thank for that.

Happy Holidays, everyone!

Meet Skera-Kina, the Balborite Assassin

Hello everyone, I'm writing in my office, enjoying a cup of hot tea. The weather has been cooler, thankfully. Here in California, we were still having daytime highs in the eighties up until last week. I've missed my daily teas.

A few bits of news: here's the cover for The Balborite Curse, the first book in my new series, The Chronicles of Tallin, slated to be released in early 2013.

Thanks again to Geometry Studios for the beautiful image of Skera-Kina, the most vicious female female assassin in all of Durn.

I'm also happy to announce that the Kindle and Nookbook versions of The Return of the Dragon Riders are  available.

Sad About Steve Jobs

Hello all. I cried when Steve Jobs died. I took it pretty hard, which is so strange, because I never met him. Like many others, I felt like I knew him, because his creations were (and still are) such a big part of my life.

A Mac Performa was my first computer ever; I bought it for $2,500 (an enormous sum to me at the time, and more expensive than my first car, by far). I looked at Steve's picture-- the one that they used as a tribute on the Apple website, and I cried.

The universe plants these visionaries on earth and then strips them away from us. Maybe it's a test so that we can appreciate the loss of something really inspirational and greater than ourselves. I guess I knew that it was coming, I had listened to the news of his declining health for a long time. I guess I never imagined that it would happen this soon. He stepped down from his position at Apple just a few weeks ago, and now he's gone.

Neil Diamond said it so succinctly... iSad.

Now, for my own news, the paperback of Return of the Dragon Riders is available on Amazon. The Kindle and Nookbook versions will be available by the end of October.

I'm in Love With My Kindle

Hello everyone. I just wanted to post an update on book two, The Return of the Dragon Riders. I'm happy to say that we are down to the wire on the second book, and the third book, Vosper's Revenge, is already underway. I'll post the exact release date soon, but my publisher says that it will probably be sometime at the end of September.

I've read a lot of great books this month, including Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen and Cannibal Nights by Kiana Davenport. Both really fantastic books, and both available on Kindle. Having a Kindle has really changed my reading habits, and I find that I'm reading more, and also browsing more for great books. I've purchased some duds, but for the most part, I've been really happy with my downloads.

Amazon makes lots of suggestions based on my purchase history, and I've found that they are usually right on the money when it comes to my likes and dislikes. Recently, I was on Amazon and a suggestion popped up for Music, (I've purchased a lot of CDs lately) and I found a great new artist called Washed Out. The music is electronic, but very chill. Even the music genre is called "Chillwave" which I'd never heard of before, even though I've been listening to electronica for years. I went ahead and downloaded all their albums from the iTunes store. Now I'm listening to the newest record, Within and Without, while I'm relaxing and writing. It's great. And I never would have found out about them without Amazon.

That's all for now, I'll post again as soon as I have more information about the next edition.

Giveaway and Great Review on Bookworm Family

Dragon Stones: Book One of the Dragon Stone Saga, just got a wonderful review on Bookworm Family. The blog is also hosting a giveaway, so if you would like to enter to win a free copy, just go to the blog and leave a comment.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book right from the get-go all the way through to the end. Like Dahlia states below, I don’t really like having to wait for the next book to come out, but I guess that’s the life of getting sucked into a series!! I tend to stay away from many series type books, but I truly enjoyed Dragon Stones and I look forward to the other books in the series ~Bookworm Family

Thank you, Bookworm Family, for the great review!

Borders is Closing

I was sad to hear that Borders Bookstore filed for bankruptcy this month. A lot of people saw it coming, so it wasn't much of a surprise. The running joke on Facebook is that "Borders was a nice place to hand out and look at books before going home to order them on Amazon."

It's sad but true, as I enjoy the portability of my Kindle more and more, it becomes harder and harder to justify wasting paper for a physical book that will just collect dust in my study. I am taking my new Kindle on vacation and I will enjoy carrying just one slim machine with all my beloved books in it.

As for Barnes and Noble, it seems as though the popularity of the Nook is going to keep them out of trouble for now.

Another great review on Goodreads

A great new review on Goodreads by Melanie Ray!

"Fantasy is my thing, so I was pleased when I got the chance to review Dragon Stones. This book? Well, I don’t know what to say, I really don’t. I don’t want to say fantastic or awesome, the words don’t have enough meaning. From the start Kristian Alva emerges us into her world. She doesn’t info dump or expect us to pick everything up at once. We start simply, with some people slaying dragons in the intro. Then we leave this scene to our main MC, a 15 year old named Alias and his grandmother Carine. Quaint, some description, quite comfortable. I would say I thought it would be something like a modern Lord of the Rings book. It’s more than Lord of the Rings, this has a lot of that special zing I loved from Harry Potter in it" ~Melanie Ray, Goodreads Review

This review so positive that it just warmed my heart. I love it when I can entertain readers with all the stories that populate my mind. I've met so many great readers so far, and it's only been a month since the release. I just wanted to say thank you for the support.

Got a Kindle!

I finally got a Kindle! It arrived in on my doorstep yesterday. I spent about an hour learning how to use it, and then realized that I never plugged in the charger all the way, so I got a battery warning (it comes partially charged).

Anyway, it's lovely. I took it with me to the pool today, wrapped in a ziplock bag. My son splashed me with water and it was as right as rain.

I'm currently reading Face the Winter Naked, a wonderful depression-era novel. It's one of the best books I've picked up this year. It's free on Amazon for a limited time, so get it if you like historical fiction. I think you'll like it.

Cover for Book Two, Return of the Dragon Riders

Defiant Press just released the cover for my second book in the Dragon Stone series, Return of the Dragon Riders: Book Two of the Dragon Stone Saga. The cover illustration was done by Jesselee of Dark Geometry Studios. It's beautiful! Thanks Jesselee.

I'll link to the pre-order page as soon as its available.

Pottermore and E-Books

Well, the secret's out. Pottermore isn't a new book. It's a website, and basically the announcement is that JK Rowling is going to finally offer e-book versions of the Harry Potter Series. JK Rowling had always refused to publish her books in e-book format, in part to discourage piracy, but of course, all of her books have been pirated for years, and in fact, she is probably the most pirated author of all time because of that fact.

The website has very little content right now. I guess I was hoping for something more exciting. I'll admit it-- I'm sad it isn't a new book.

You can sign up for alerts, but they aren't even taking e-mail sign ups yet, because of "overwhelming demand." I don't know how you can have "overwhelming demand" when no one is actually signing up for anything yet, but then again, I'm not a marketing guru. I'll post more news when I hear something new.

5-Star Review of Dragon Stones on Book Garden Reviews

This morning, I got a Google Alert that my new YA fantasy, "Dragon Stones," had received its first 5-star review from Book Garden Reviews. Yay! Time to celebrate.

Isabella says:
Kristian Alva is a talented author, spellbinding the reader with each page. The story is fast-paced with delicious dialogue, vibrant descriptions, and mind bending twists. This is a wonderfully engaging book that stands on its own. Dragon Stones is the first book in the Dragon Stones saga, and I am excited to see what happens next.

I'm trying not  to promote it too much, because the Kindle edition isn't even out yet, (although the Nook version of Dragon Stones is live). I will be posting a giveaway on Goodreads next week.

Happy Father's Day!

It's already Father's Day on the East Coast, and the Google icon has switched to something cute and  memorable for this holiday:

We are spending the day with family. Lots of kids, gossip, good food, and maybe some movies. Disney's Cars II will be coming out next month, so we may watch the first Cars movie (for the hundreth time) to get prepared for the sequel.

I hope everyone has a great Father's Day; give a dad ( your dad, brother, husband, uncle...) a hug today.

Countdown to Pottermore

So, more news about the "Pottermore" website. Rowling's publicists have stated that the announcement is NOT a new book. Scholastic also confirmed that the announcement will not be a new book in the series. They won't say much else, but there is lots of speculation that this may be the long-awaited lexicon; an encyclopedia of all-things Potter.

It may also a be an interactive website-- perhaps a game? Who knows. We'll all find out soon, though. The announcement is happening 6 days from now (here's the You Tube video of the countdown).

What is JK Rowling's new "Pottermore?"

Very excited about a (possible) new development in the fabulous world of Harry Potter! Thanks to a recent notice on Book Blogs, we know that Rowling is planning something new in the much-beloved Potter universe.

The information is spotty, but currently, the domain for Pottermore is active, with a short note that says, simply, "Coming Soon" and it's signed by the author herself.

I've added a screenshot so you can see what I mean. For Harry Potter fans, this news is akin to winning the lottery. I watched numerous interviews with Rowling after she finished the series, and I was certain from her responses that she was done with these characters.

I'm really happy about this, and I'll be posting more news as more is released.

UPDATE: If you click on the owls, it takes you to a countdown clock! Thanks to Dorothy on Book Blogs for this tip!

Currently Reading: Dragon's Kin by Anne McCaffrey

It's been a long time since I picked up a book by Anne McCaffrey. She was one of my favorite authors growing up. I read most of her books in high school, but I'm always happy when I find an undiscovered gem like Dragon's Kin.

I found this one at my favorite used bookstore yesterday, and came home to start reading it immediately. This is a book that McCaffrey co-wrote with her son, Todd McCaffrey.

It's great so far-- I'm about half-way through and the storyline is great. I had no idea that Anne McCaffrey's son was a fantasy author, as well. Looks like great storytelling runs in the family. I should have a full review by the end of the week.

Joined Smashwords and Goodreads Today!

I officially joined Smashwords and Goodreads today, two of the best websites for authors to find readers and people who share similar interests. It was easy to join both sites, and Goodreads only took about 48 hours to add me to the site under "author status." I've already made a few friends, one of whom is a Goodreads librarian and has over 5,000 followers! Amazing.
